Wine & the Zema family dates back to the 1800’s with winemaking in Italy. Demetrio Zema came to Austraila in 1959 to marry Francesca. He discovered Coonawarra could provide him with the opportunity to fulfil his life long dream of owing his own vineyard. The dream became reality in 1982 when the Demetrio, Francesca and sons Matt & Nick purchased a small block in the heart of Coonwarra. The property already had 8 acres of mature Shiraz vines and the Zema’s planted the remaining 12 acres with Cabernet Sauvignon. Today the vineyard totals 150 acres with Shiraz, Cabernet, Cabernet Franc & Malbec.

2003 Cluny
• 91/100 “A complex wine; very much in the herb, leaf and earth spectrum, with some attractive spice overtones.” James Halliday Australian Wine
Companion 2008
2004 Shiraz
• 91/100 “A typically elegant, middleweight Zema Shiraz” Huon Hooke – The Sydney Morning Herald March 07
• “This is the finest Zema Estate Shiraz since 1998, and typically elegant and moderately rich Coonawarra Red” Jeremy Oliver-Australian Medicine July 06
• “Here’s a red to restore your trust in Coonawarra’s red dust….with plenty to sniff, taste and admire” Greg Duncan-Powell-Sydney Morning Herald Mar 06
2005 Cabernet
• 91/100 “Zema is one of the class acts of the Coonawarra, making cabernet that’s ripe, balanced, elegant and usually less oaky than the region’s norm.
This one has smoky bacon aromas over ample dark fruits with a hint of raisin.” Huon Hooke – For the Cellar – Good Living- SMH 2/09/08
2004 Family Selection Shiraz
• Silver Medal - Class 62 Premium Red Varieties - 2009 Macquarie Group Sydney Royal Wine Show
• 95/100 “Alcohol of 15.5% - what are they doing at Zema? But this is a very smart wine all the same. Spicy, ironstone minerally and peppery aromas and
fine French oak. But big tightly structured with power and intensity.” Huon Hooke – Good Living – SMH 21/08/07
• 94 points “An elegant, classy wine; a fine mix of blackcurrant and cherries; silky mouthfeel and length; fine tannin and oak
handling; a return to top form.” James Halliday Australian Wine Companion 2009
2004 Family Selection Cabernet Sauvignon
• 93 points ***** "A big, very ripe, rich cabernet that is something of a departure from Zema’s usual elegant style. Offers rich dark chocolate and
blackberry aromas. Extended breathing improved the wine and tamed its initial oakness." Huon Hooke - Top 100 New Releases - Dec/Jan 2008 Gourmet
WINE Magazine
• ***** ”Without great fanfare, they produce an excellent range of red wines without too much mucking around. Family Selection is Zema’s top wine
the this 2004 Cabernet is an outstanding example of an Australian classic wine type. Sweet, blackcurrant syrup aromas meet the nose, with hints of
black olive and a floral note. Perfectly weighted cedary oak plays its part well, and the palate is ripe and complete, finishing in perfectly balanced ripe
tannins.” Ralph Kyte-Powell – Uncorked, The Epicure – Melbourne Age 13/11/2007
• 95 points “Has clearly managed the challenges of the vintage; excellent texture and mouthfeel, the clear-cut blackcurrant and
cassis fruit; tannins and oak precisely positioned on the finish.” James Halliday Australian Wine Companion 2009 |
